Stephen Fransen, MD

Founder, Chairman and Chief Medical Officer at Lumata Health

Dr. Stephen Fransen has extensive work experience in the healthcare industry. In 1990, they started working as a Retina Specialist at the Dean McGee Eye Institute, where they focused on treating retinal disorders. Concurrently, they also joined the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine as an Associate Professor, where they shared their knowledge and expertise with medical students.

In 2017, Dr. Fransen founded Lumata Health, a technology-driven healthcare startup aimed at preventing blindness and addressing ophthalmology staffing challenges. As the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Medical Officer, they led the development and implementation of an intelligent eye care management platform. Previously known as Retinal Care, Lumata Health utilizes advanced technology to improve patient care and outcomes in ophthalmology.

Throughout their career, Dr. Stephen Fransen has made significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology, both through their clinical work and their commitment to medical education.

Dr. Stephen Fransen obtained their Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Chemistry from the University of Manitoba in 1979. Stephen then went on to pursue their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at the same institution, which they completed in 1985.

Following the completion of their MD degree, Dr. Fransen began their medical residency in ophthalmology at the Dean McGee Eye Institute, which is part of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Stephen completed their residency in 1989.

After their residency, Dr. Fransen undertook a fellowship in Medical Retina at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, which is affiliated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Stephen completed their fellowship in 1990.

In November 1991, Dr. Fransen obtained their Diplomate certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology.

It should be noted that Dr. Fransen also completed a transitional internship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center from 1985 to 1986.
