Job description

Communication System Engineer, Aalyria Space

About Aalyria:

Aalyria is a leading Silicon Valley technology company that supplies laser communications technology and moving-network orchestration software platforms to the Communications, Aerospace, and Defense industries.  Aalyria spun out of Google in 2022 and is at the forefront of innovation in the field of satellite and airborne mesh networks, as well as cislunar and deep space communications. Aalyria’s flagship product, Tightbeam, is a cutting-edge laser communications system that is capable of connecting land, sea, air and space targets across vast distances, with high reliability and with data-rates previously unachievable (100s of Gbps).

Role Overview:

Aalyria Space is seeking a highly accomplished and forward-thinking Communication System Engineer to lead the way in shaping the future of optical communication systems. In this pivotal role, the Engineer will be at the forefront of innovation, leveraging expertise and experience to design, develop, and implement cutting-edge optical communication protocols, from the physical layer to link layer and transport layer.

Key Responsibilities:

In the role of Communication System Engineer at Aalyria Space, the individual will assume a central role in the evolution of optical communication systems. The primary responsibilities of this role include pioneering advancements in the design, development, and implementation of optical communication protocols, spanning the gamut from the physical layer to link layer and transport layer.

The ideal candidate will leverage their extensive expertise in optical signaling and modem protocols, with a special emphasis on high spectral efficiency and power efficiency for optical communication links. Furthermore, a mastery of signal processing functions and performance requirements is essential to optimize free-space optical communication systems. The Communication System Engineer will also be responsible for executing projects throughout all stages, from the initial design concept to manufacturing, validation, and product release.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline with 5+ years of industry experience.

  • Expertise in design, development, and implementation of optical communication communication protocols, from physical layer to link layer, and transport layer protocols.

  • Expert proficiency with optical signaling and modem protocols in both high spectral efficiency and power efficiency regimes for optical communication links.

  • Expert proficiency in signal processing functions and performance requirements for optimizing free-space optical communication systems.

  • Experience with design for manufacturability, and prototype transitions to scale manufacturing.

  • Experience with executing across all project stages, from design conception to manufacturing, validation, and product release.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in relevant engineering discipline with 10+ years of industry experience.

  • Experience with optical communication terminal architecture, including key system trades between communication, tracking, and other satellite subsystems.

  • Prior experience with development and deployment of free-space optical communication modems.

Compensation

  • Base compensation range: $120,000 - $150,000

  • This position is Bonus & Equity eligible

Remote Work
