Binod Prasad has over 13 years of work experience in bioprocess development, research and process development, and microbiological techniques. In 2021, they began working as a Senior Scientist Bioprocess Development at Abalos Therapeutics GmbH, where they are responsible for developing and implementing innovative upstream and downstream process technologies for efficient manufacturing of virus-based biologics. Binod also actively supports the transfer of process technologies from bench to pilot scale to external CMO.
In 2020, they worked as a Scientist – Research and Process Development at Space Biology Unlimited, France / Friedrich-Alexander University, Germany, where they developed process/models to decode fermentation kinetics in the absence of convection and hydrostatic pressure in space microgravity and ionizing radiation conditions. Binod also developed and optimized robust and generic downscale models for mammalian cell cultivation and tissue engineering in microgravity, and created mutants of Euglena employing the CRISPR-Cas9 Ribonucleoprotein-based genome editing technology and analysis of the transcriptomic/proteomic data.
From 2018 to 2020, Binod Prasad was a Research Scientist at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Binod initiated collaboration and worked with cross-functional and interdisciplinary teams leading and managing major activities, supporting different viewpoints, communicating project expectations, and successfully meeting project timelines. Binod also designed and developed an ambitious project 'WISE' and executed 4 innovative space experiments for a biotech company, and developed and optimized scale-down processes (USP/DSP) to produce novel pharmaceuticals and bioactive metabolites by yeast and bacteria in mini-bioreactors in microgravity.
From 2015 to 2018, they were a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Binod had strong leadership skills managing a team of 4 researchers resulting in the stable genetic transformation of Euglena and evaluation of various expression systems to circumvent inefficient transgene expression. Binod also performed heterologous expression, production, and purification of recombinant peptide defensin in yeast & microalgae cell factories, and gathered, analyzed, and annotated proteomic, transcriptomic, & genomic data resulting in decoding the evolution, cell biology, and biotechnological potential of Euglena.
In 2014, they were a Guest Researcher at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg- Busan Campus, where they optimized and developed USP and DSP units to produce a high-value antiviral compound from microalgae against fish viruses, developed single-use bioreactors to cultivate cells for the extraction of the antiviral compound, and performed growth of mammalian and fish cell lines in batch cultures as well as virus cultivation for antiviral activity assays.
From 2008 to 2014, Binod Prasad was a Project Assistant level II at CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute. Binod performed QC microbiological, chemical, and physical examinations of steam-cooked meat kofta sealed with air or nitrogen gas and stored at a lower temperature. Binod also characterized LAB isolated from tannery fleshings via molecular approach and applied potential isolate for fermentative bioconversion of tannery fleshings into a biomaterial for feed development, resulting in 1 peer-review article. Binod refined their methodic and detail-oriented skills in diverse microbiological techniques by collaborating across departments to extract, purify, and characterize antibacterial peptides of Bacillus spp.
Binod Prasad began their educational journey in 2003, when they earned a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, General from JAYA COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE. In 2006, they obtained a Master's degree in Industrial Microbiology from the University of Madras. From 2009 to 2010, they studied Korean Language at Silla University and earned a TOPIK. Binod then went on to Dongseo University, where they earned a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering in 2015. Finally, they obtained a Ph.D. (Doctor of Engineering) in Genetic Engineering from FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg in 2017.
