Nonna Akopyan

Nonna Akopyan is vice president, board attorney, responsible for executing Abiomed’s global legal strategy. Previously, Nonna served as Abiomed’s vice president and chief intellectual property counsel. In that role, she was responsible for building global intellectual property strategy, including trademarks, copyrights, and a robust patent portfolio for Abiomed’s products worldwide.

Prior to joining Abiomed in 2019, Nonna served as an intellectual property counsel at Novo Nordisk, responsible for counseling stakeholders and providing strategic legal advice on intellectual property matters, including patenting strategies, freedom of operations and due diligence in support of product launches, life-cycle management, in-licensing opportunities, and developmental leads. While at Novo Nordisk, Nonna also served as a senior attorney in general legal where she provided comprehensive legal support to the commercial organization as well as regulatory and compliance sectors.

Nonna also served as an associate patent attorney at Lerner, David, Littenberg, Krumholz & Mentilk LLP, an IP boutique law firm, where she handled a broad range of IP matters, including prosecution, litigation, due diligence, licensing and settlement agreements for medical device, software, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology clients.

Prior to attending law school, Nonna worked in pharmaceutical sales for four years where she held yearly leadership roles and won numerous sales, outstanding teamwork, and leadership awards. As a senior gastroenterology and medical specialist for TAP (Takeda, Abbott Products) Pharmaceuticals, Nonna was responsible for developing and maintaining a marketplace by cultivating customer relations and product sales.

Nonna holds a J.D. from Pace University Elizabeth Hubbard School of Law, where she graduated with high honors and served as the editor-in-chief of Pace University International Law Review. She earned a B.A. in biology with honors from Boston University.
