Steve Magoun

Steve Magoun is currently the Director of Engineering at Abridge. Prior to that, they were the Engineering Director at edX from October 2014 to July 2019. At edX, Steve managed multiple onshore and offshore/remote software engineering teams totaling over 40 people. Steve's role included organizational design, hiring, coaching, performance management, process, strategy, pre- and post-sales customer interaction, vendor selection and management, and budgeting.

Some of Steve's notable accomplishments during their time at edX include leading the engineering for the edX for Business product line from conception through launch and initial growth phase, leading the Solutions Engineering team and delivering technical leadership and oversight on multiple simultaneous multi-year engineering engagements for world-renowned universities and nation-states, and guiding a multi-year customer project through a post-launch requirements change which scale up 100x with no downtime. In addition, Steve has also helped multiple teams and other engineering leaders understand their value, capabilities, and areas for improvement – then guided them to execute on those improvements. As a result, each team emerged demonstrably stronger and more effective.

Steve was also a charter member of the steering committee responsible for edX’s engineering hiring practices. Their approach – grounded in rigor, equity, and empathy – delivered improved candidate quality, higher acceptance rates, and decreased time-to-hire. Lastly, Steve was also a member of edX’s Security Working Group where they were responsible for definition and execution of security practices. Steve introduced rigor into the team’s processes for vulnerability triage and remediation. Led development and deployment of secure development practices training. Coordinated security testing activities, including vendor selection and oversight. Co-led overhaul of PCI compliance program resulting in completed formal attestation of compliance.

Steve Magoun has a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from Dartmouth College.

Nathan Price - Machine Learning Engineer, Kyle Libby - Senior Software Engineer, and Aditya Ekbote - Senior Software Engineer report to Steve Magoun. They are on a team with Julia Chapin - VP, Operations, Lindsey Spellman - Head, Marketing, and Anna Von Reden - UX Lead. Their manager is Shiv Rao, CEO & Co-Founder.
