Amne Darwish-Talab

Director, Social Services, East at ACCESS

Amne joined ACCESS in 1979, serving as director of the summer youth program through 1981 while completing her studies at Wayne State University (WSU).

After graduating from WSU with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1982, Amne served on the ACCESS Board of Directors for two years. In 1988 she was hired at ACCESS as a social services unit supervisor, overseeing social services, immigration, legal and translations services. She also was responsible for overseeing the Canadian Refugee program.

In 2003 Amne was promoted to director of Social Services East. There she leads the social, immigration, legal and translation services team. Amne also oversees the Michigan Department of Human Services co-location program at the Center.

For the past two years Amne has led the United Way/LISC-funded Center for Working Families program in Dearborn. The program recently received a grant to start a new three-year Center for Working Families program at the ACCESS Community Health and Research Center of Macomb County in Sterling Heights.

Amne was also responsible for receiving the first United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) grant to promote citizenship and provide citizenship classes to community members in Dearborn, Hamtramck and Sterling Heights.

She helped develop the Immigrant Integration Model for ACCESS that was awarded $50,000 in 2010 by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI).

In addition to her role as director of Social Services East, Amne has a great passion for serving seniors and making sure they have assistance to age in place. Amne served as a state senior commissioner from 2006-2009 for the Office of Services to the Aging. She was also instrumental in developing halal Meals on Wheels as part of her work with Wayne County and The Senior Alliance Area Agency on Aging 1C.

Amne is a former member on the Michigan State Legal Planning Committee, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, DAAA 1A Refugee Task Force, Department of Human Services Community Affairs Committee, and Social Security Administration Community Affairs Committee.
