Kathrine Frey

Dr. Frey is a patient safety and blood management, pioneer. Board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and also in Transfusion Medicine, Dr. Frey is a practicing pathologist and has been Director of Transfusion Medicine at Fairview Southdale, a 350-bed community hospital since 1996. Beginning in 2009, she and her blood management team have reduced hospital blood use by 33% concurrent with increased surgical volumes for a composite savings of $35 MM. A peri-operative anemia clinic was added to hospital blood management services in 2011 with a greater than 80% decrease in blood usage by evaluated patients.

As a nationally recognized expert on patient blood management, Dr. Frey is a frequent speaker on this emerging medical discipline and how it relates to improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. Dr. Frey is a member of the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM), Standards Committee of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), and a Member of the Women Business Leaders of the US Healthcare Industry Foundation (WBL).
