The Position
The Sr. Philanthropy Officer is part of the Philanthropy team responsible for an integrated fundraising model. The Sr. Philanthropy Officer operates as an “out-the-door” fundraiser, spending more than 60% of their time on donor-facing activities, while working simultaneously with the Director, Philanthropy to develop key growth strategies, manage operational work plans, and monitor and evaluate key performance metrics to support the outcomes of the strategic plan.  

The Sr. Philanthropy Officer will play a leadership role in building a ‘culture of philanthropy’ within the Cross Cancer Institute, including but not limited to; grateful patient referrals, staff giving, cultivating and stewarding key ambassadors at the Cross Cancer Institute. 

Key Accountabilities 

Fundraising & Donor Relations Management

  • Actively manage a portfolio of 80-100 major gift prospects and donors who are in various phases of the development cycle with a focus on donors giving $25K +
  • Use a variety of tools, including analytics, referrals, and prospect research to identify and qualify new major gift prospects.
  • Navigates the donation process specific to the donors chosen method of giving (pledge, one-time gift, in-kind share or mutual fund donation, etc.), based on the Foundation’s gift acceptance policy.
  • Establish meaningful relationships with assigned donors by creating solicitation strategies to engage and move donors up the donor pyramid while also aligning with Foundation priorities.

Impact and Acknowledgement

  • Work with the Donor Impact team to implement appropriate donor recognition and stewardship strategies, including building long-term, meaningful donor relationships.

  • As appropriate, pursues stewardship tactics including tours, hosting meetings/events, distribution of impact material.

Record Keeping & Other Duties

  • Prepare proposals, briefing documents, presentations, gift agreements, and other relevant materials.

  • Ensures all assigned donor records, actions, and proposals are up to date and accurate.

  • Maintains knowledge of major gift fundraising, how wealth is structured, estate planning and tax aspects of charitable gifts, including relevant CRA legislation.

Leadership

  • Plays a leadership role at the Cross Cancer institute to engage physicians and staff in stewardship and/or cultivation opportunities.

  • Work with the Director, Philanthropy to monitor and evaluate growth strategies

  • Build and lead key projects in service of our philanthropy strategy

  • Mentor junior staff members, demonstrating willingness to coach and develop others

Required Qualifications 

  • A post-secondary degree in a relevant discipline, including Business, Marketing, Communications, and/or combination of education, experience and training acceptable to the Foundation.

  • Minimum of 7 years of direct fundraising experience in a charitable organization or non-profit organization (relevant experience may be considered)

  • Proven experience in nurturing and developing a prospect pipeline for specific fundraising cases that align the organization’s priorities with donors’ interests.

  • Experience in the management of internal relationships both with other departments whose work directly impacts the required outcomes from this position and related internal stakeholders.

  • Understanding and experience of donor database management systems (Raiser's Edge/Salesforce).

  • Previous experience in health care philanthropy is an asset.
