Sebastian Requena

Sebastian Requena, Ph.D. has a diverse range of experience in the field of optical engineering, spanning over a decade. Sebastian is currently employed as a Principal Optical Engineer at Alcon, where they began in October 2021. Prior to this, they worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratory as a Senior Optical Engineer from October 2019 to October 2021. Before that, they served as a Senior Optical Engineer at Elbit Systems of America from June 2017 to October 2019. In this role, they led optical development in an electro-optical systems group, performing design, analysis, and prototyping of optical and photonic devices and systems, as well as assuming the position of Scrum Master for the Systems Engineering Team. Sebastian also has experience with various software and tools such as Zemax, Matlab, COMSOL, LabView, and DOORs, and has expertise in requirements analysis and prototype to production transition.

Prior to their work at Elbit Systems of America, Sebastian was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at UNT Health Science Center (UNTHSC) from June 2016 to June 2017. During this time, they managed successful projects involving the development of single molecule microscopy imaging to study biophysical processes related to diseases such as cystic fibrosis and heart disease. Sebastian also developed image analysis tools using machine learning to evaluate large datasets.

Sebastian's earlier work experience includes a position as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Texas Christian University from August 2011 to May 2016. In this role, they studied polymer nanocomposites and plasmonic nanoparticles and gained proficiency in atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Before entering the field of optical engineering, Sebastian served as a Desktop Support Team Leader at Angelo State University from 2009 to 2011. In this role, they led a group of technicians and was responsible for presenting solutions and maintaining a knowledgebase.
