General Counsel at Algbra

Omar Salem has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and companies. Omar is currently employed at Algbra as the General Counsel, a position they started in May 2023. Prior to this role, Omar was the Head of Legal & Regulatory Affairs at Algbra from August 2022 to May 2023.

Omar'sexpertise included the regulation of banks, brokers, asset managers, PE houses, funds, trading and clearing platforms, mortgage lenders, consumer credit providers, as well as advising on Brexit, MiFID II, the SMCR, CASS, the Benchmarks Regulation, ESG requirements, the regulation of fintech, and diversity requirements. Omar remained in this position until August 2022.

Additionally, Omar worked as a Seconded Solicitor in the Legal Regulatory Group at Citi from October 2016 to March 2017. Omar gained valuable experience in this role before advancing their career further.

Omar's early career involved social impact work. Omar co-founded the UpRising Leadership Programme at UpRising Leadership, a skills and knowledge program designed for talented young people. From March 2008 to November 2010, Omar led a team responsible for designing and delivering innovative program content. Omar engaged with various stakeholders and worked closely with senior management. Omar also gave oral evidence before the Speaker's Conference, a cross-party committee of MPs and Lords, to advocate for a more representative Parliament.

Prior to their role at UpRising Leadership, Omar worked at The Young Foundation as a Researcher / Research Associate from March 2008 to November 2010. Omar conducted research and contributed to various projects during their time there.

Omar's career started in the political arena, where they worked in the House of Commons as a Senior Researcher to Emily Thornberry MP from April 2006 to March 2008. Omar previously held a role as a Researcher to Emily Thornberry MP from September 2005 to March 2006.

Omar Salem completed their Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from the University of Oxford between 2001 and 2005. Currently, from 2018 to 2022, Omar is attending The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where they are working towards an Executive LLM degree focused on Financial Law and Financial Regulation.
