Michael Burkart, Ph.D. is a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego, and Associate Director of the California Center for Algae Biotechnology. Originally from Texas, he received a BS in Chemistry from Rice University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard university. The Burkart Laboratory pursues interdisciplinary research in the fields of organic and biological chemistry, with a focus on natural product biosynthesis and metabolic engineering. His research expertise has allowed Algenesis to develop new materials through the creative application of metabolic engineering and synthetic/process chemistry.
