Job Title: Business Development Manager

Classification: Exempt

Job Summary:  Responsible for managing business development/sales efforts for their assigned area(s).  The overall goal of the Business Development Manager is to secure significant profitable work from new and existing clients, while building and enhancing client relationships and enhancing the company’s image. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Business Development Manager will be primarily involved with performing the following duties and responsibilities. 

  • Use discretion and independent judgment and professional skills to perform daily duties.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Company’s services to assist in identifying applicable potential new clients and projects.
  • Identify and qualify profitable project opportunities, analyze the marketplace for pertinent strategic opportunities, build strong partnerships within the marketplace and create strategies that result in winning profitable new business.
  • Schedule and attend offsite meetings with potential and current clients for the purpose of building relationships and securing profitable new work.
  • Lead project pursuits and customer satisfaction efforts throughout the business development/sales process, from opportunity identification to client cultivation to proposal preparation to contract execution and project completion.
  • Develop and facilitate professional and competitive proposals and presentations, including assistance with budget and pricing development as needed, contract negotiations, coordination with marketing.
  • Conduct or participate in presentations to clients.
  • Develop and maintain trust and confidence of clients; maintain close contact with potential and current clients to assist in leading to new and repeat business.
  • Maintain a detailed pipeline of clients and projects in Prophet, including status of opportunities and analysis/reasons for wins/losses.

This position will also require performance of the following duties:

  • Regularly communicate with VP/GM and/or SVP/RM regarding business development/sales opportunities, leads status, difficulties, and related issues.
  • Participate in trade shows and professional meetings.
  • Complete internal reports containing information on sales calls.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licensing/Certifications:

  • Degree in Construction Management, Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the construction industry.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Valid State-issued driver’s license and vehicle insurance which meets the Company’s liability coverage requirements and satisfactory driving record.

  • Strong understanding of the construction business, industry, and local construction market.
  • Understanding of the development of schedules and budgets, value engineering, general means and methods, design-build method of delivery, and industry standard forms of contractual agreements.
  • Ability to read and understand drawings, specifications, maps, surveys, mechanical and electrical sheets, project schedules, cost reports, and other construction documents; understanding of contract provisions which address scope of work and design criteria.
  • Good knowledge of all sub trades and their relationship and impact on each other.
  • Ability to estimate costs associated with technical tasks.
  • Excellent skills in organization, time management, planning, and prioritization.
  • Proactive and readily adaptable to changing conditions or demands and ability to work well under pressure and with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to handle stress.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in computers and applicable software.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and reach.
  • Occasionally lift 10 lbs.
  • Extensive computer use and reading from documents and computer. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended hours and flexible schedules, including evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently.

Work Environment

  • The majority of the Business Development Manager’s duties and responsibilities take place in external offices during the course of making sales calls and attending meetings; however, field visits including office and non-manual work may also be required.
  • Will be exposed to outside weather elements while in the field.
  • May be exposed to loud noises, fumes, and/or airborne particles while in the field.
  • Dress, including proper PPE, is conducive to a building construction environment.
