Matthew Dowling is a Data Science Manager at AltaML. Matthew previously worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Alberta from October 2016 to September 2017. Matthew's work there focused on calculating a small correction to the energy levels in a Hydrogen atom - one of the two largest theoretical uncertainties. This calculation involved approximately 600 unique multi-dimensional integrals, called Feynman diagrams, that needed to be computed.
In order to deal with such a large number of calculations, Matthew created a python interpreter that took basic information about the diagrams and figured out what needed to be done for each one. This process included checking for similarities among diagrams that could be leveraged to simplify the calculation, creating linearly independent systems of equations, and automatically creating all of the program files that would be needed for the various programs that would be used to do the calculation. The most computationally intensive parts of the calculation were run on the new Cedar and Graham supercomputers located at Simon Fraser University and University of Waterloo respectively.
Matthew Dowling has a PhD in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics from the University of Alberta. Matthew also has a Master of Physics from the University of Alberta, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the same school.
Their manager is Juliano Bitu Rabelo, Director of Data Science. They are on a team with Gagan Kapoor - Data Science Manager, Chad Bryant - Data Science Manager, and Mohammad Riazi - Data Science Manager.
