Nitin Gogtay

Nitin Gogtay, M.D. has a diverse range of work experience. Nitin currently serves as the Chief of Research and Deputy Medical Director at the American Psychiatric Association (APA), where they lead the organization's medical research strategy and oversees federal grant applications. Nitin was instrumental in the development and launch of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM 5-TR) for psychiatry, which is recognized as the gold standard for mental health diagnosis globally. Additionally, Dr. Gogtay drives ongoing product innovation as the Chief of PsychPRO, the APA's national mental health registry.

Prior to their role at the APA, Dr. Gogtay had a private practice in psychiatry since 2000, and they continue to maintain their private practice. Nitin also has extensive experience in academia, serving as an Academic Advisor, Honorary Faculty, Mentor & Supervisor, and Grants/Journal Reviewer since 2001.

From 2013 to 2020, Dr. Gogtay held significant positions at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Nitin served as the Chief Medical Officer/Director of the Office of Clinical Research, Vice-Chair of the Intramural IRB (Child Psychiatry), and Associate Director of Clinical Research. In these roles, they provided oversight for all NIMH-funded clinical research, managed a $150M annual clinical research funding portfolio, and directed the Intramural Research Program focused on childhood-onset schizophrenia. Dr. Gogtay also established the Office of Clinical Research to enhance extramural oversight and support for grantees.

Prior to their time at NIMH, Dr. Gogtay worked at the National Institute of Mental Health/National Institutes of Health (NIMH/NIH) since 2000. During this period, they served as a Staff Psychiatrist, Scientist, Clinical Fellow, and Principal Investigator in the Child Psychiatry Branch. Nitin directed a groundbreaking longitudinal program on childhood schizophrenia and psychosis, as well as conducted a seminal study on healthy children's brain development.

Dr. Gogtay's earlier experience includes serving as a Psychiatry Resident, Post-Doctoral Fellow, and Section Chief from 1989 to 2000.

Nitin Gogtay, M.D. began their education at BJ Medical College in Pune, India, where they completed their Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and M.B., B.S. degrees in General Medicine and Pathology from 1982 to 1989. Nitin then pursued a Psychiatry Residency at the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences from 1997 to 2000.
