Ed Murphey

Associate Director, Education And Research at AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association)

Ed Murphey has an extensive work experience in the field of veterinary medicine. Ed has held various roles in different organizations throughout their career. Ed began their career as an Intern in Equine Medicine and Surgery at Rochester Equine Clinic in 1989. Ed then worked as an Associate Veterinarian at Xenia Veterinary Associates from 1990 to 1992. From 1992 to 1995, they served as a Resident at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine & Veterinary Hospital. Ed then joined The University of Texas Medical Branch as a Postdoctoral Student from 1995 to 1998. At Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, they worked as a Clinical Instructor & Head of Equine Emergency Services from 1998 to 2000. Following that, they served as a Visiting Clinical Instructor at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine from 2000 to 2001. Ed then joined Shriners Children's Texas as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow in Trauma and Burns from 2002 to 2003. At The University of Texas Medical Branch, they held the positions of Instructor and later Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology from 2003 to 2011. Currently, they are working at AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), where they have held the roles of Assistant Director and Associate Director of Education and Research since 2012.

Ed Murphey completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology/Animal Biology at The Ohio State University from 1980 to 1984. Ed then went on to pursue a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1989. After gaining some experience in the field, Ed pursued a Master of Science degree in Veterinary Sciences/Veterinary Clinical Sciences, General at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, which they completed from 1992 to 1995.

Ed's thirst for knowledge led him to The University of Texas Medical Branch, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Immunology/Experimental Pathology from 1995 to 2000. Additionally, in February 2000, Ed Murphey obtained a certification as a Diplomate of Large Animal Surgery from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons - ACVS, showcasing their expertise in the field.
