Kenneth Mercer

Kenneth Mercer has a diverse work experience in the water industry. Kenneth started their career as an Environmental Health Intern at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1995 and later worked as a Hydrologist for the United States Geological Survey. Kenneth conducted various projects related to water resources, storm water management, stream discharge measurements, and water quality monitoring.

In 2000, Kenneth worked as a Research Assistant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, focusing on improving precipitative softening through the addition of calcite seed crystals. Kenneth was awarded the 2002 UNC Department of Environmental Science and Engineering Bunker Award.

Kenneth joined MWH in 2002 as an Associate Engineer and later became a Senior Engineer. Kenneth worked on projects related to water resources, treatment, and distribution, both in the United States and overseas. In this role, they also contributed to various aspects of local, state, and federal regulations.

Kenneth served as a NWRI-Cargill Fellow at the National Water Research Institute and as a Switzer Environmental Fellow at the Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation. Kenneth also worked as a Ph.D. Researcher and Engineer at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where they studied treatment options for high ionic strength waste streams.

In 2009, Kenneth joined the American Water Works Association (AWWA), where they held various roles, including Operations and Standards Engineer, Senior Manager of Research and Utility Programs, and Senior Manager of Technical and Research Programs. In these positions, they managed research projects, partnerships, and technical advisory roles for standards and manuals of practice.

Kenneth also took on editorial roles at AWWA, including Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Water Works Association and Editor-in-Chief of AWWA Water Science, a new interdisciplinary journal.
