Diana Marina has a varied work experience, beginning in 2003 when they worked as a Reagent Manufacturing Chemist at Abaxis, Inc. Diana then went on to pursue their Master's degree at San Francisco State University from 2005-2008, where they completed a dissertation project on the transcriptional regulation of motility genes in a Gram-positive bacterium. From 2008-2014, they were a Doctoral student at the University of California San Francisco. In 2014, they began working as a Basic Life Science Research Associate at Stanford University, where they developed a CRISPR-based method to make seamless mutations in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Diana also managed the laboratory and supervised a work-study student. From 2014-2016, they worked as a Staff Scientist at the NASA Ames Research Center, supporting the NASA BioSentinel project in developing a biosensor nanosatellite. In 2016, they began consulting as a Scientist at Second Genome, and in 2017 they began working as a Scientist at Amyris.

Diana Marina began their education in 2000 when they graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biology from California State University - East Bay. Diana then went on to obtain a Master of Science (MS) in Cell and Molecular Biology from San Francisco State University in 2007. Finally, they earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of California, San Francisco in 2012.
