Shirley L. began their career in 2008 as a Laboratory Technician in Central Support at Santa Cruz Biotechnology. In 2011, they moved to Biosearch Technologies as an Oligonucleotide Production Technician II. In 2013, they took on the role of Creative Director & Event Coordinator at 20Mission, as well as Street Art Class Coordinator at 1AMsf. In 2014, they were an Assistant Production & Account Manager at Newskool SF Apparel and a Production Assistant Manager at Nate1Design. In 2015, they became an NGS Target Enrichment Production Supervisor, NGS Target Enrichment Production Associate III, Oligonucleotide Manufacturing Associate II, and Gene Manufacturing Technician at Twist Bioscience. Finally, in 2020, they assumed the roles of Pilot Plant Manager, BioProcess Development Supervisor, and Bioprocessing Associate III at Amyris.

Shirley L. received their Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Cell/Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2010. Shirley then continued their studies at the same university, pursuing a degree in Molecular Cell Biology.
