Mark Hawker

Chief Engineer, UK at Anthesis

Mark Hawker is the Chief Engineer for Anthesis in the UK. Prior to this, they worked as the Head of Engineering for Sainsbury's from 2010 to 2018. In this role, they were responsible for the engineering design of the company's stores and distribution centers, covering HVAC, mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, lifts, travelators, security, and fire. Mark oversaw a yearly investment program of £150 million.

During their last six years with Sainsbury's, Hawker made key achievements in reducing the company's carbon footprint. Mark oversaw the roll-out of CO2 refrigeration to over 200 stores (602kT CO2e reduction), the integration of biomass boilers to 91 stores (15kT CO2e reduction), and the integration of ground source heat pumps to 33 stores (9kT CO2e reduction). Mark also installed c300,000 LED luminaires into 300 stores (130GWh pa - 60kT CO2e reduction) and 40MW PV panels across stores and logistics (60GWh generated - 27kT CO2e). In addition, they installed 6 CHP (2MWe) running on AD gas from Sainsbury's supply chain (18GWh - 300T CO2e).

Hawker has also been recognized for their work in improving the efficiency of the company's engineering delivery process. Mark has helped to deliver £25 million in engineering savings through better design and procurement over 6 years. Their work has been recognized with various awards, including CIBSE, Lux, EDIE, and Guardian. Under their leadership, electricity consumption decreased by 260GWh / 17.5% absolute despite an increase in space by 52%.

Mark Hawker studied mechanical engineering at the University of Southampton and Colstons Boys School, Stapleton, Bristol. Mark is a Fellow of IMechE.
