Derwin Johnson has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. Derwin began their career in 1980 as a Video Journalist and later became a Producer-Cameraman, Middle East Bureau Chief, and Reporter at CNN. In 1984, they joined ABC News where they held various roles including Middle East Bureau Chief, News Producer, and Broadcast Producer for World News This Morning. In 1992, they transitioned to academia and worked as an Adjunct Professor and Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at Columbia University until 1999. Derwin then joined PR Hill&Knowlton as the Senior Managing Director, US Director of Media & Communication Training, and Co-Head of the New York Media Group. In 2001, Derwin co-founded Vistance Group and served as the Managing Principal until 2007. Currently, they hold the position of Senior Counsel at APCO Worldwide, a role they have held since 2007.

Derwin Johnson started their education in 1977 at Syracuse University. Derwin pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in the School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, with a focus on Journalism. Derwin successfully completed their undergraduate studies in 1979. In 1979, Derwin Johnson enrolled at Boston University for Masters Studies in Journalism. Derwin attended Boston University for one year, completing their master's studies in 1980.
