Sheryl Harmer

Co-Founder and Chair of the Board at Aperture Education

Sheryl Harmer has a diverse and extensive work experience spanning several decades. Sheryl started their career in the 1970s working in various school districts and international Department of Defense schools, where they held roles as school administration, learning specialist, and psychologist. In 1992, they became a School Principal in the Kent School District, overseeing Spring Glen Elementary and later Glenridge Elementary. During their tenure, these schools achieved awards and recognition for their excellence. In 2000, Sheryl joined the Committee for Children as the Director of Program Development, a position they held for seven years. In 2007, they founded SLPH & Associates, providing consulting services for schools, non-profits, research centers, and state governmental organizations, with a focus on Social and Emotional Learning. Sheryl also held the role of Social and Emotional Learning Strategist at Apperson Inc. from 2010 to 2017. In 2013, they joined the Whidbey Institute's Board of Directors until 2019. Sheryl co-founded Aperture Education, LLC in 2017, where they currently serve as the Chair of the Board. Additionally, since 2017, they have been a part of the External Advisory Board for the UW Center for Resilience and Compassion at the University of Washington.

Sheryl Harmer earned their Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Idaho State University, where they studied from 1966 to 1970. Sheryl then pursued further education and completed their Master of Science in Education at the University of Southern California between 1974 and 1976. Afterward, they continued their academic journey and obtained an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Washington, where they attended from 1999 to 2005.
