Michael Bales has had a diverse work experience spanning various industries. Michael began their career in the automotive industry as an Assistant Business Manager, overseeing financial operations for a multi-line General Motors dealer. Michael then transitioned to the aviation industry, where they held the executive position of Executive Vice President at Appalachian Flying Service, overseeing financial operations, maintenance, and flight school operations.
Bales later worked as an Algebra Teacher at Tazewell County Public Schools before joining Bluefield State College as an Information Technology Specialist, responsible for network maintenance and hardware repair. Michael then worked as an Accountant/Auditor at Douglas Hess CPA PC, conducting audits and preparing tax returns for various entities.
In 1999, Bales joined the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens-Four County Public Transit as the Chief Financial Officer/Deputy Director, responsible for agency operations and community-based services. Michael also held the role of Vice President at CORI, Inc., where they were involved in public transit logistical software development and community-based healthcare software development.
Bales later joined Southwest Virginia Community College, where they held various roles including Financial Services Manager, Business Manager, and Compliance Officer. Michael also served as an Adjunct Faculty and FAA Part 107 Flight Instructor.
Currently, Bales is the Director of Fiscal Management at the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens, overseeing financial management for the organization.
Michael Bales has a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Accounting from Bluefield State University, which they obtained from 1995 to 1997. Prior to that, they completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences (A.A.S.) degree in Accounting from Southwest Virginia Community College, from 1980 to 1982.
In addition to their formal education, Michael Bales has obtained multiple certifications. These include the Small Purchase Credit Card & Travel Card Program Administrator certification from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Accounts, which they obtained in June 2019. Michael also has the Trauma-Informed Sexual Assault Investigations and Adjudication 23 Hours Title IX Investigator certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, obtained in September 2017.
Furthermore, Michael Bales holds various certifications related to emergency management and disaster response. Michael has obtained certifications such as the VTTX - Active Shooter College Campus certification from FEMA in December 2016, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program certification from FEMA in July 2011, and the IS-00700.a National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification from FEMA in October 2010.
