Angelo Kaplan has extensive experience in the field of histopathology and translational science. Angelo is currently serving as the Director of IHC/Translational Science at Arcus Biosciences since November 2020. Prior to this, they worked at Oxford BioTherapeutics as a Senior Scientist from October 2015 to November 2020, where they provided histopathology support for oncology drug development programs, developed biomarker strategies for patient selection, and served as a medical monitor for a Phase 1 clinical trial.
Before joining Oxford BioTherapeutics, Angelo worked at Ensigna Biosystems, Inc. as a Senior Scientist from June 2014 to October 2015. In this role, they managed molecular pathology and histology laboratory operations, designed assays and optimized protocols to support pharmacology studies, and conducted antibody validation and hybridoma screening.
From April 2006 to December 2007, Angelo worked at Novartis as a Research Specialist I. Here, they performed immunohistochemistry to support oncology drug assessment and development efforts, conducted experimental pathology research, and contributed to high-throughput digital slide imaging and analysis for pre-clinical R&D.
Earlier in their career, Angelo gained industry experience at Chiron Corporation as a Staff Research Associate III from October 2005 to April 2006, where they performed IHC analyses of human tissues and tumors to evaluate the effects of potential cancer therapeutics. Angelo also worked as a Staff Research Associate II at UC Berkeley - Burnside Laboratory (Molecular and Cellular Biology) in August 2005 and as a Staff Research Associate I at UCSF - Orthopaedic Surgery Research from June 2003 to September 2005.
Additionally, Angelo has worked in various roles at UC Berkeley, including as a Mammalian Physiology Intern from January 2003 to May 2003, a Laboratory Assistant from January 2002 to January 2003, and an Undergraduate Student Instructor for the human anatomy lab from August 2002 to December 2002.
Angelo's work experience began with a student internship at UCSF Fresno - Summer BioMedical Internship from May 1998 to August 1998.
Angelo Kaplan completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley in May 2003. Angelo then pursued further education at the University of California, Berkeley from 2004 to 2005, studying Medical, Biochemistry, and Economics. Finally, they attended the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine from 2008 to 2011, where they obtained their Doctor of Medicine degree on August 27th, 2011.
