Michael McCarthy has had a long and varied career in software engineering, beginning in 1991 as a Contract Software Engineer for Digital Equipment Corporation. Michael then moved to Cabletron in 1992 as a Contract Software Engineer, where they worked on the Cabletron Remote LanView SNMP network management system. In 1993, they returned to Digital Equipment Corporation as a Contract Software Engineer, porting Digital's "Common SNMP Agent" to the MACH-i386 BSD UNIX platform. In 1994, they became a Software Consultant for Boston Technology, where they provided software architecture and implementation in C for the AccessNP family of enhanced telephony messaging systems. In 1998, they returned to Cabletron as a Consulting Software Engineer, providing software design and implementation in C, Microsoft Visual C++ and 68360 Assembler for the RoamAbout\uf0d4 IEEE 802. 11 family of Wireless Access Points. In 2000, they joined Artel Video Systems as a Principal Software Engineer, leading software engineer for design, coding and implementation in C and MIPS assembler of various portions of the CrossStream\uf0d4 MPEG embedded digital video switching platform. In 2002, they became a Principal Software Engineer for Avaya, and in 2004 they moved to LoJack Corporation in the same role. In 2010, they became a Software Consultant for Mueller Systems, and in 2011 they returned to Artel Video Systems as a Sr. Principal Software Engineer.

Michael McCarthy attended Merrimack College from 1975 to 1978, where they studied Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Michael then attended University of Massachusetts Lowell, though the duration of their studies is unknown.
