Gary Whorwood has extensive work experience in the banking and financial industry. Gary started their career at Ernst & Young as a financial auditor in 1994, later transitioning to the role of Information Systems Assurance Supervisor/Manager. Gary joined Chaucer Syndicates Ltd as a Group Financial Accountant in 2002 before moving to ASB Bank in 2004. At ASB Bank, they held various roles including Divisional CFO, Divisional Chief Risk Officer, and Financial Services Line 1 Risk Lead. Gary then joined Bank of New Zealand in 2011, where they served as Divisional CFO and Chief Risk Officer. Gary managed risk reporting, insights, and change risk initiatives as General Manager and Head of Management Assurance - Risk. Gary also played a key role in the implementation of enterprise-wide governance risk and compliance systems. In their current role at ASB Bank as the Head of Operational Risk & Compliance - Business Banking, they oversee operational risk and compliance for the Business Banking division.
Gary Whorwood completed their education at various institutions. In 1985, they attended Northcote College, where they did not pursue a specific degree or field of study. Following this, from 1990 to 1992, they studied at The University of Auckland and obtained a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) with a focus on Accounting. In 1993, they briefly attended the University of Auckland again and earned a Diploma of Commerce (Dip. Com) specializing in Information Technology. Additionally, in April 2022, they obtained a certification in Strategic Leadership for Principals Programme from Springboard Trust.
