Markus Merilainen

Markus Merilainen has extensive experience in medical affairs, clinical sciences, and medical marketing. Markus is currently serving as the Executive Director - Medical Affairs Lead for Astellas Gene Therapies. Prior to this role, they worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. as the Senior Medical Director Global Medical Affairs from 2017 to 2021. Before that, they held a position as the Medical Director Clinical Sciences at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. from 2013 to 2017. Markus also worked at Novo Nordisk Inc. as the Medical Director Medical Affairs - future GLP-1 from 2012 to 2013, and as the Field Director Medical and Scientific Affairs from 2008 to 2012. Markus joined Novo Nordisk, Inc. in 2006 as a Clinical Director and worked there until 2008. Prior to that, they held the role of International Medical Advisor at Novo Nordisk A/S from 2003 to 2006. Markus started their career in 1991 as a medical doctor in clinical practice. Before that, they worked at Orion Corporation in various roles including Medical Affairs/Medical Marketing and International Medical Advisor.

Markus Merilainen completed their Bachelor's degree in Medicine from the University of Eastern Finland. Markus pursued further studies and obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Helsingin kauppakorkeakoulu.
