Gary Backous

Law Enforcement Standards SME E54 Committee at ASTM International

Gary Backous serves as a Lieutenant and Division Commander at the Story County Sheriff’s Office since 2003, holding previous positions as Sergeant and Deputy Sheriff. Backous is actively involved with the National Sheriffs’ Association as a representative and state and local co-chair of the Standards Coordination SubGroup. Additionally, Backous coaches men's soccer at Faith Baptist Bible College and has contributed as a subject matter expert for various organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Homeland Security. With significant coaching experience at the youth and high school levels, Backous also holds advanced degrees in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati and Buena Vista University, along with a graduate certificate from the University of Virginia.
