Melanie Smith has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. Melanie began their career as a Teacher in various high schools from 1995 to 2007. In 2009, they worked as a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Chevron. Melanie then transitioned to the role of Junior Lecturer (Marine engineering subjects) at Cape Peninsula University of Technology from 2010 to 2012. In 2013, they became a Junior Lecturer (Mathematics) at the same university. From 2014 to 2016, they worked as a Mechanical Design Engineer at Chevron. Melanie then joined Cape Peninsula University of Technology again, this time as the Mechanical Engineering Cooperative Education Coordinator from 2016 to 2018. Currently, they are employed at Astron Energy (Pty) Ltd. as a Lead Engineer since April 2018 and has recently taken on the role of Drawing Office Lead in May 2022.
Melanie Smith has a diverse education history. In 1991, they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology/Animal Biology from the University of the Western Cape. In 1995, they pursued further studies at the same university and obtained a Postgraduate Higher Diploma in Education with a focus on Mathematics and Science Education.
In 2007, Melanie attended Cape Peninsula University of Technology, where they earned a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Mechanical Engineering. Following this, they enrolled at the University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika in 2010, completing a BTech in Mechanical Engineering the following year.
Most recently, in 2019, Melanie attended the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town, where they completed the Astron Energy - UCT Leadership Programme with a specialization in Organizational Leadership.
