EVP & Head, Global Regulatory Affairs at Athersys

Manal Morsy is the SVP & Head of Global Regulatory Affairs at Athersys. Manal has over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with a focus on rare diseases, oncology, and infectious diseases.

Morsy began their career in 1991 as an Assistant Professor in the Human Genetics Department at Baylor College of Medicine. In 1995, they joined Merck as a Research Fellow in the Virus and Cell Biology department. Manal was quickly promoted to Associate Director of Worldwide Regulatory Affairs for Vaccines and Biologics in 1999, and then to Director in 2002. In 2004, they left Merck to join Johnson & Johnson as Senior Director of Global Regulatory Affairs for Anti-infectives.

In 2007, Morsy joined PTC Therapeutics as Vice President and Head of Global Regulatory Affairs. During their five years at PTC, they were responsible for small molecule gene expression modulation, rare diseases, and oncology. In 2012, they joined Athersys as SVP & Head of Global Regulatory Affairs.

Manal Morsy has a degree in Professional Development from The Wharton School, an MBA in General Management from Drexel University's LeBow College of Business, a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biomedical Sciences from Eastern Virginia Medical School, and an MD in Medicine and Surgery from Alexandria University - Faculty of Medicine.

Manal Morsy reports to Daniel Camardo, CEO. They are on a team with Alison O’Sullivan - Senior Director, Human Resources, James Glover - SVP, Commercial Manufacturing, and Rakesh Ramachandran - VP & Head, Information Technology & Communications.
