Sheffield Hale's work experience began in 1986 at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP, where they worked as an Associate & Partner until 2002. From 2002 to 2012, Hale served as Chief Counsel at the American Cancer Society, an organization focused on cancer research, information sharing, and patient support. In 2012, they became President & Chief Executive Officer of the Atlanta History Center.

Sheffield Hale completed their Juris Doctor (JD) degree from the University of Virginia School of Law from 1982 to 1985. Prior to that, they pursued a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in History from The University of Georgia, studying there from 1979 to 1982.
