Jonathan Hoff

Senior Motion Planning Engineer at Autel Robotics

Jonathan Hoff has a diverse work experience with a strong focus on research and development in robotics and autonomous systems. Jonathan is currently employed as a Path Planning Algorithms Engineer at Autel Robotics since 2021. Previously, they worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2014 to 2021, where they conducted research on bio-inspired flapping-wing robotic bats and contributed to the development of a system called Bat Bot (B2). Jonathan also served as a Teaching Assistant for the ECE 445 Senior Design class and the ME 460 Signal Processing class during their tenure at the university.

In 2018, Jonathan worked as a Research Intern at American Haval Motor Technology LLC, where they collaborated with a team to integrate sensors on an autonomous vehicle and improve its software framework. Jonathan also developed a localization algorithm using ROS and EKF to enable the vehicle to switch between different localization methods in GPS-denied environments.

Prior to that, Jonathan was a Research Intern at SPAWAR in 2015, where they worked on the communication system between unmanned surface and underwater vehicles. Jonathan also had a previous research internship at SPAWAR in 2014, where they contributed to the development of an optimized ping scheduling algorithm for detecting and tracking submarines.

Jonathan's early work experience includes roles as a Physics Tutor at Whitworth University from 2011 to 2013, where they assisted students in physics subjects. Jonathan also conducted research with a physics professor to develop trajectory optimization programs for spaceflight missions. Additionally, they worked as a Research Intern at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 2013, where they performed data acquisition and analysis for portable radiation detectors.

In summary, Jonathan Hoff has a strong background in robotics, autonomous systems, and research, with experience in path planning algorithms, bio-inspired robotics, sensor integration, localization algorithms, communication systems, and trajectory optimization.

Jonathan Hoff completed their education in a linear progression, starting with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Engineering Physics from Whitworth University, which they obtained from 2010 to 2014. Following that, Hoff pursued a Master of Science (MS) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, from 2014 to 2017. Finally, they earned their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Electrical Engineering from the same institution, attending from 2016 to 2020.
