Mitch Smithson

Sr. Manager/ Deputy Chief Engineer/ Electrical Engineer Fellow at Axiom Space

Mitch Smithson has extensive work experience in engineering and technical roles. Their most recent position is at Axiom Space, where they are a Sr. Manager/Deputy Chief Engineer/Electrical Engineer Fellow. In this role, they led the development of avionics and software for a next-generation Lunar Spacesuit, and designed and tested life-critical controllers for a Portable Life Support System.

Prior to Axiom Space, Mitch co-founded and served as the VP of Engineering and Production at ResMetrics, a startup that achieved profitability and significant revenue within a few years. Mitch designed and built a patent-pending metering pump used in over 300 wells for various projects.

Before that, they worked as a Sr. Engineering Advisor at Core Laboratories, where they designed automation systems and performed Solidworks modeling for chemical sampling and tracer handling. Mitch also coordinated outsourced production to local machine shops.

Mitch was also the Chief Engineer at Production Sciences Inc., where they developed and commercialized a system for measuring and controlling fluid depth in oil wells. Mitch handled the development of electronics, software, and secured necessary certifications.

Additionally, Mitch had a lengthy tenure at Halliburton as a Sr. Technical Advisor/Electrical Engineer/Engineering Manager. During their time there, they managed the Digital Infrastructure Department and oversaw the development of downhole, subsea, and surface electronics and software.

Their early career includes positions at Lockheed Martin, where they served as an Engineer, Principal Engineer, and Chief Engineer. There, they led the technical activities of a team to develop the Japanese Experiment Module Image Processing Unit, a space-borne digital video and still image storage and compression system.

Mitch Smithson attended the University of Houston-Clear Lake from 1981 to 1983, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Process Monitoring and Control.
