David Stewart-Smith began their work experience in 1974 as a Radiochemist/Health Physicist at Oregon Health Services, where they worked until 1985. David then joined the Oregon Department of Energy as an Assistant Director from 1985 to 2005. In 2008, they became a partner and Treasurer at 3S Consulting, LLC, where they provided consulting services in radiation safety, chemistry, science education, renewable energy, and energy policy analysis. In 2014, they started working as a Science Teacher at Beaverton School District. The end dates for their roles at 3S Consulting, LLC and Beaverton School District were not provided.

David Stewart-Smith attended Lewis & Clark College from 1970 to 1974, where they earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemistry. David then pursued further education at Portland State University, graduating with a Master of Public Administration (MPA) in Public Health from 1979 to 1985. Finally, they attended George Fox University from 2006 to 2008, obtaining a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with a focus on Secondary Education and Teaching.
