Hans-Joachim Giessmann

Hans-Joachim Giessmann serves as Director Emeritus and Senior Advisor at the Berghof Foundation since January 2012, focusing on conflict transformation and peacebuilding, particularly in Afghanistan and Ethiopia as of 2020. Additionally, Hans-Joachim holds the position of Executive Director at the German Atlantic Association and is a member of the Board and the Steering Group for "NATO Around the Brandenburger Tor." Since March 2010, Hans-Joachim has been a member of the Advisory Council for "Civil Crisis Prevention" at the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Previous roles include membership and leadership positions on the Global Agenda Council on Terrorism at the World Economic Forum from November 2008 to July 2014 and directorship at Berghof Conflict Research from October 2008 to December 2011. Hans-Joachim's academic background includes a Dipl. phil. and Dr. sc. pol. in American Studies, Philosophy, and History from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, completed between 1974 and 1981.
