Carla Frau is a Research Scientist at the Berlin Institute of Health since March 2023 and a Senior Scientist at TissUse GmbH since July 2022. Previously, Carla held a faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School's Liver Research Center, where significant contributions included establishing CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing in human induced pluripotent stem cells, focusing on cell metabolism related to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and end-stage liver disease, and developing mRNA-lipid nanoparticles for gene therapy. Carla's earlier experience includes a role as a Research Assistant at the Cancer Research Center of Lyon, where a human intestinal organoids biobank was established, and studies on cancer stem cells and drug resistance were conducted. Carla obtained a Ph.D. in Oncology and Molecular Pathology from Università degli Studi di Cagliari and holds a Master of Pharmacy in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the same institution. Academic credentials include additional training at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.
