Dave Heffernan has a diverse work experience in various communication and management roles. Dave started their career as a Managing Editor at the National Science Foundation in 1980 and later joined the Children's Defense Fund, where they served as the Managing Editor and led the creation of the annual publication, "The State of America's Children." In 1997, they joined SciComm Inc. as a Project Manager, responsible for overseeing a contract with the FDA and improving regulatory compliance among medical facilities. Dave then worked as a Senior Communications Advisory at MasiMax Resources, Inc., providing marketing and media relations support to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Starting in 2005, Dave served as the Vice President of Public Affairs at the Center for Education Reform, where they coordinated communications and public affairs activities, increased media coverage by 20%, and advanced the school choice movement. In 2007, they became the Principal at Bethesda Communications, responsible for recruiting and managing marketing communications teams, preparing business plans and annual reports, and creating internal and external communications. In 2009, Dave joined Bethesda Green as the Director of Communications, a role they held until 2015.

Dave Heffernan attended The George Washington University from 1979 to 1983, studying Journalism.
