Julia Brown

Julia Brown is a research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Julia received their PhD from Cornell University in 2015, where they worked as a graduate teaching and research assistant. Her research focused on aquatic viral ecology, microbial diversity, microbial oceanography, and viral metagenomics. Julia also worked on a number of different projects that looked at in situ virus populations of aquatic and animal environments using viral metagenomics and molecular biology techniques. After receiving their PhD, Julia worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at Albert Einstein College of Medicine from February 2015 to January 2016. At Einstein, they worked in the lab of Dr. Libusha Kelly with a team of researchers from Einstein and MIT on an NSF funded project exploring the fate of viruses in the sea. Her responsibilities for the project were to assemble, curate, annotate and describe 280 phage genomes.

Julia Brown earned their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Microbiology from Cornell University and their BA in Chemistry, Biochemistry from Carleton College.

Julia Brown reports to Deborah Bronk, President & CEO. They work with Rosalynn Sylvan - Managing Director, COBRA, LeAnn Whitney - Research Scientist, and Rachel Sipler - Senior Research Scientist, Center for Water Health and Humans Director.
