Darin Spurgeon

Director, Strategy, Planning & Management at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Darin Spurgeon oversees strategy and operations for the Global Policy & Advocacy division. Since joining the foundation in 2012, he has also served as deputy director for Strategy, Planning, and Management for the Program Advocacy and Communications, Donor Government Relations, External Communications, and Africa Teams.

Before joining the foundation, Darin served as Americas director for Virgin Unite, where he established the organization in the U.S. and Canada. Prior to joining Virgin Unite, Darin worked in Italy for the UN World Food Programme, where he was responsible for programs in the Middle East and Southern Africa. While there, Darin had the opportunity to participate in the largest humanitarian operation in history – delivering food to Iraq.

Previously, Darin was the country director for Save the Children in the Balkans, where he established program operations in Montenegro to assist Kosovo refugees, as well as developing educational programs in Bosnia. During this period, he also co-founded Bosnia’s first eco-tourism company, Green Visions.

Darin has an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France and speaks Serbo-Croatian.
