Brittany Long

Program Manager, School Programs at Black Girls CODE

Brittany Long is the Program Manager of School Programs at Black Girls CODE. Brittany has been with the organization since August 2016 and has been integral in the design and development of four semesters of rigorous, culturally responsive, and inquiry-based advanced literature studies curriculum from scratch based on complex literature. Brittany has also played a key role in diversifying the required curriculum at Democracy Prep by including authors and novels of color, along with varied formatted lessons.

In addition to their work at Black Girls CODE, Brittany has also been an Advanced English Seminar Teacher at Democracy Prep Public Schools since August 2016. In this role, Brittany has provided extensive assistance and support to senior students to get accepted into Ivy-League institutions by annually writing letters of recommendation, providing college admission guidance, and engaging in weekly parent communication. Brittany has also ensured the alignment of the Democracy Prep English curriculum with Advanced Placement standards and Common Core standards to instill life-long learning.

Since 2017, Brittany has also been spearheading the development, proposal, and implementation of an original elective Film Studies curriculum for all grades (11-12) at Democracy Prep. In 2019, Brittany established Democracy Prep’s Natural Hair Club as a safe space for students of color to learn best practices for natural hair care and overall empowerment. And in 2020, Brittany carried out the design and delivery of specialized/differentiated instruction across English content areas to support the specific learning needs of students with disabilities and IEPs.

Most recently, Brittany achieved success in converting and transitioning semesters of the in-person curriculum to remote curriculum, as well as redesigning the senior Advanced Literature Studies course in form of live and prerecorded lessons during the Covid-19 pandemic. Throughout this process, Brittany utilized teaching programs such as Nearpod, Edpuzzle, Zoom, Google Doc, PowerPoint, Google Forms, Edulastic, Notability, Jupiter, and Google Classroom to drive a significant increase in remote engagement.

In all their work, Brittany partners closely and collaboratively on a daily basis with all stakeholders (i.e., special education teachers, co-teachers, social work, parents, staff) to meet the needs of every child.

Brittany Long has a Bachelor’s Degree in Radio, Television, and Digital Communication from Howard University.

Brittany Long reports to Sofia Mohammed, Interim CEO. They work with Lauren Idoko - Senior Manager, Alumni Engagement, Kimberly Bryant - Founder, and Laquisha Moore-Scott - Volunteer Community Manager.
