Derek Chung

Derek Chung is an experienced professional with a diverse background in the energy and environmental industries. Derek started their career as the Chapter President/Co-Founder of Engineers for a Sustainable World in 2010. Derek then worked as a Project Engineer for ADvTECH Environmental for over three years and gained experience in project management, construction, contracting, and consulting, with a focus on stormwater compliance and groundwater monitoring. In 2015, Derek founded Canary Drones, LLC, where they currently manage a team developing a crop analytics method using drones, hyperspectral imaging, and proprietary software algorithms. In 2016, Derek joined ENGIE Storage as a Senior Project Engineer, where they played a crucial role in the installation of over 25MWhs of energy storage systems across Southern California and gained expertise in all aspects of energy storage installation. Derek then worked at ForeFront Power as a Business Development Engineer for Energy Storage, where they spearheaded community solar plus storage in the New York market. Derek joined Wärtsilä Energy in 2019 as a Senior Proposal Engineer, where they contributed to over 2 GWh of energy storage and learned a lot about energy storage technology. Derek is currently the System Engineer and Commercial Support for Energy Storage and has been overseeing the technical project management aspects with customers since 2020. In 2023, Derek will join BlackTeal Energy as the Head of Business Relations.

Derek Chung attended Walnut High School from 2004 to 2008. Derek then graduated from UC San Diego in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Environmental Engineering. In 2014, Derek obtained certifications as an Engineer in Training from NCEES and as a LEED Green Associate from the U.S. Green Building Council.
