Craig Atencio has an extensive work experience in data science and analytics. Craig started their career as a Research Engineer at Massachussetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where they analyzed multivariate data and developed circuit theory models. Craig then worked as a Graduate Student Researcher at UC Berkeley - UC San Francisco, applying machine learning algorithms to predict outputs of nonlinear systems. At UCSF, they served as a Post-doctoral scholar, designing research experiments and collaborating with theoretical scientists to apply novel data mining technology. Craig then moved on to UCSF Medical Center as a Research Scientist, where they applied classification approaches and dimensionality reduction methods to brain data. At UCSF-Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Craig worked as an Assistant Adjunct Professor, conducting research on the central auditory nervous system and leading data mining research projects. Craig then joined Blue Shield of California as a Senior Health Care Data Analyst, Senior Data Scientist, Lead Data Scientist, and Principal Data Scientist. In these roles, they developed various machine learning models, presented results to directors and VPs, and recovered millions in revenue from claims overpayments. Throughout their career, Craig has demonstrated expertise in statistical analysis, machine learning, data mining, and healthcare analytics.
Craig Atencio has a strong educational background in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, and natural science. Craig obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering from the University of California, San Francisco, completing their studies from 2000 to 2007. Prior to that, they earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University, graduating between 1996 and 1998. Before their time at Boston University, Craig Atencio studied at Pepperdine University, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BA) degree in Natural Science from 1993 to 1996. Additionally, they have acquired a certification in Big Data with PySpark from DataCamp in December 2021.
