Carolin Struller

Department Head - R&d, Competence Centre & Laboratory - Sustainability Ambassador at Bobst

Carolin Struller has extensive work experience in the field of sustainable research and development, primarily focused on the conversion and optimization of transparent vacuum coated barrier films for food packaging applications. Carolin began their career as a Development Undergraduate at BOBST in 2008, where they managed the quality control laboratory and conducted development studies. Carolin then worked as a Research Student at the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV, where they studied the characterisation of polymer film surfaces and aluminum coated polymer films.

Their work at The Manchester Metropolitan University involved two roles. As a PhD Student, they collaborated with BOBST Manchester and Innovia Films to investigate the effects of polymer film surface properties and deposition process conditions on the barrier performance of vacuum-coated polymer films for food packaging materials. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, they worked on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership project in cooperation with BOBST Manchester. This project aimed to optimize the conversion processes of transparent vacuum coated barrier films for commercial food packaging use. It involved laboratory and pilot trials, as well as planning and leading industrial scale conversion trials at other BOBST facilities.

Carolin Struller rejoined BOBST in 2013 and has held various roles. Carolin started as a KTP Research Associate, continuing their work on the conversion of vacuum coated barrier films. Carolin then became a Research Scientist, focusing on sustainability research. Subsequently, they served as a Senior Research Scientist and a Department Head, overseeing the R&D, Competence Centre, and Laboratory. As a Sustainability Ambassador, they have played a prominent role in promoting and implementing sustainable practices in their work.

Carolin Struller obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Technology and Biotechnology of Food from the Technical University of Munich in 2009. Carolin then pursued further education and received a Diplom-Ingenieur degree in Technology and Biotechnology of Food from the same institution in 2010. Continuing their academic journey, Carolin Struller earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Surface Engineering from The Manchester Metropolitan University in 2013.
