Steven Kapusta has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. Steven began their career as a Scientific Illustrator at Illinois State University in 1981. From 1982 to 1987, they worked as a Research Technologist at the University of Illinois Medical Center in the Department of Surgical Oncology. Steven then worked as a Sterilization (Reuse) Technician at West Suburban Kidney Center from 1987 to 1989. Following that, they were an Optometric Technician at LensCrafters in 1989. In 1990, they became a Photography Teacher Assistant at the University of Illinois at Chicago - Graduate College, where they taught various photography techniques. In 1991, they interned at Rush - Presbyterian - St. Lukes Medical Center in the Department of Illustration and Design. From 1991 to 1995, they worked as a Full-time/Part-time Biomedical Illustrator. In 1992, they joined Encyclopaedia Britannica as a Layout Artist II, where they laid out pages for print products. Over the years, they progressed to the role of Graphic Designer, creating pages and covers, and then Composition Technology and Design Production Manager, overseeing production work and managing staff. Since 2006, they have been the Art and Composition Director at Encyclopaedia Britannica, where they set standards for art direction and oversees the creation of design specifications, templates, and workflow. Currently, Steven retains the title of Senior Illustrator while also serving as the Art and Composition Director.
Steven Kapusta began their education by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Illinois State University between 1977 and 1981. After completing their undergraduate degree, they pursued further education in the field of biomedical visualization at the University of Illinois at Chicago - Graduate College, where they obtained a Master of Associated Medical Sciences degree from 1989 to 1991. Prior to their master's degree, Steven explored design and visual communications at the University of Illinois Chicago from 1987 to 1989. Steven also attended the American Academy of Art from 1987 to 1988 to focus on figure drawing. Additionally, they gained expertise in figure drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985.
