Michael Mongan

Michael Mongan is an experienced legal professional currently serving as Solicitor General at the California Department of Justice since 2014, with a progression from Deputy Solicitor General to Supervising Deputy Solicitor General. Prior to this role, Mongan worked as an attorney at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP from 2010 to 2014 and held positions at The White House as Deputy Counsel to Vice President Biden from January 2009 to August 2010 and as Deputy Counsel to the Vice President-elect during the Obama-Biden Transition in 2008-2009. Mongan's judiciary experience includes serving as a law clerk for Justice David H. Souter at the United States Supreme Court and for Judge Merrick B. Garland at the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Mongan's early career involved legislative research with the United States Senate Finance Committee and serving as district office staff for Congressman Mike Honda. Educationally, Mongan earned a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School (2006) and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science with a minor in Economics from Stanford University (2001), following attendance at Tamalpais High School from 1993 to 1997.
