Kaan Egilmez

Dr. Egilmez is a mechanical/electrical engineer with over 20 years of experience in software development and algorithm design for operations research, artificial intelligence, and computer aided decision support systems. Prior to joining Cambridge Energy Solutions, Dr. Egilmez was a Senior Associate at CRA International, Inc. where he was responsible for developing multiple modeling and analysis tools for electric power system simulation, asset valuation, and trading analysis for deregulated electricity markets. These projects included the design and development of a day ahead market clearing engine for the Italian whole sale electricity market as well as close collaboration with CES on the development of the Tranzer and Busmap applications as well as the unit maintenance scheduling functionality for Dayzer long term simulations. Since joining CES, Dr. Egilmez has been tasked with managing the development and implementation of new algorithms and functionality for the CES Dayzer application suite. These projects have lead to various improvements to Dayzer including the incorporation of a MIP based unit commitment algorithm, the improvement of LODF analysis capability and various other new and improved analysis options for Dayzer and Tranzer. In addition, Dr. Egilmez developed the Lua based Dzscript scripting environment for extending and automating Dayzer and Tranzer functionality. Dzscript is actively used by CES clients to automate their Dayzer and Tranzer based analyses as well as being used internally at CES for various server side scripts that run on a daily basis to forecast load and predict unit outages. Dr. Egilmez has continued to help extend the capabilities of the CES software tool set by developing various visualization tools for Dayzer such as the vizGIS and vizDZR scripts. His most recent efforts have lead to the development of a new parallel unit commitment algorithm for Dayzer and the MPI based high performance cluster computing tools Dzpsim (parallel simulator) and Dzpqi (parallel query interface).

At Tabors Caramanis & Associates, Dr. Egilmez was the software architect responsible for the CIMPLEST framework for agile manufacturing system design and analysis. He was also responsible for various software implementations of TCA proprietary electric market design and analysis algorithms. From 1992 to 1997, Dr. Egilmez was associated with the Production Control of Manufacturing Systems Laboratory at Boston University, where he developed Flow Nets as an object oriented extension to Continuous Petri Nets. Flow Nets have been shown to be effective in rapid modeling of scheduling problems associated with large-scale manufacturing systems with complex material flows and operational constraints. While at MIT, Dr. Egilmez developed the Modal State Logic formalism for the coordination of teams of intelligent software agents to control manufacturing systems such as robotic cells and transfer lines.
