Andy Vanmater

Computational Design Architect at CannonDesign

Andy VanMater has a diverse work experience in the architecture and design field. Andy started as an architecture intern at SP Architects in 2006, where they worked on construction documents, conceptual design, red line sets, and visualizations. Andy then joined Cannon Design as an Architect A1 in 2011, and later transitioned to the role of Computational Design Specialist at Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) in 2013. In this role, they leveraged their computational skills to support design investigations of various scales, developed tools for automated data exchange and optimization, and created complex system models for effective design interrogations. In 2017, Andy joined CannonDesign as a Computational Design Architect, and also became an Adjunct Professor at Washington University in St. Louis.

Andy VanMater began their education in 2004 at the University of Arkansas, where they pursued a Bachelor of Architecture degree. Andy completed their studies in this field in 2009. In 2010, Andy enrolled at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, where they focused on Computational Design, Emergence, Biomemetics, Fabrication, and Design. Andy completed their studies in this program in 2011, earning a Master of Science degree in Emergent Technologies and Design.
