Joe Barrera has been a patent attorney for over 20 years and was formerly in-house at Universal Display Corporation and Bausch + Lomb. He concentrates his practice on the procurement and enforcement of global patent portfolios in very competitive consumer healthcare, pharmaceutical, and medical device markets. Joe also has worked with clients to develop patent procurement strategies in the areas of specialty chemicals, agricultural chemistry, structural panel composites, display technologies including OLED technologies, inorganic catalysts, and specialty polymers such as coatings, fracking fluids, and fuel cell conducting membranes. He has advised key opinion leaders and research scientists as part of product development teams to strategically define and protect innovation. While at Bausch + Lomb Joe secured patent protection for eye care, neutraceuticals products and neutraceutical products that accounted for more than 60% of total earnings with only 20% of the total patent procurement budget. He is a strong advocate of patent appeals and inventor declarations – a strategy that is aligned with product and regulatory timelines as well as post-grant challenges. In addition to a law degree and Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry, Joe has held post-doctoral positions at the University of Virginia and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
