Dr. Sebastian Aguirre is the Vice President, Head of Platform at Carbon Biosciences. He has spent nearly two decades studying relevant human and animal viruses, with a focus on the development of vaccines, antivirals, and other virus-derived therapeutics. Since March 2020, he was the scientific co-founder and Senior Director of Therapeutic Discovery and Development at a stealth gene therapy startup, where he developed novel tools for in vivo gene therapy. Previously, he was Director and Head of Discovery at Generation Bio (NASDAQ: GBIO), where he provided scientific leadership to advance the company platform technology. Before that, Dr. Aguirre spent eight years in the Department of Microbiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, where he performed pioneering research on the virus and host molecular interaction, coevolution, and viral immune evasion. His work has been published in journals such as Cell, Nature Microbiology, Immunity, and PLOS Pathogens. He is also an investor in different patent applications on viral and non-viral gene therapy modalities and methods to modulate host immune responses. He received his professional degree in biotechnology from the National University of Littoral, Argentina, and a Ph.D. in virology from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
