Matt Walsh

Matt Walsh has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of journalism, media, and education. Matt is currently serving as the Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Culture at Cardiff University, where they oversee the strategic direction of the school, its teaching, research, and social impact. Prior to this role, they worked as a Senior Lecturer at the same university.

Before joining Cardiff University, Matt ran their own media consultancy firm called Typeset Media Ltd. Matt successfully delivered various projects for international clients and organizations such as Al Jazeera, The Thomson Reuters Foundation, ITN Consulting, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Matt has also worked at the University of Northampton, where they held the position of Head of Journalism, Media and Performance Studies. Matt led a department with a diverse range of programs and had strategic responsibility for academic staff and students at various levels.

In addition to their academic career, Matt has gained valuable industry experience. Matt worked as a freelance program editor at Al Jazeera Media Network and served as the Deputy Editor of ITV News Channel, Programme Editor of ITV News, and Production Journalist at ITN. Matt also has experience working at The Times as the Head of Multimedia, where they played a key role in introducing audio/video content to the website and leading the website relaunch.

Matt Walsh earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from King's College London from 1992 to 1995. Matt then pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism at Falmouth University from 1996 to 1997. Most recently, they completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Journalism at City, University of London from 2015 to 2022. In addition, they obtained certifications as a Fellow from the Higher Education Academy in 2016 and as an Associate Fellow from The Higher Education Academy in September 2015.
