Joao Seixas de Medeiros

Maritime Data Scientist at CargoMetrics Technologies

Joao Seixas de Medeiros has a wide range of work experience in the maritime industry. Joao began their career in 2011 as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at Laboratório de Ondas e Correntes - LOC - PENO/COPPE/UFRJ. In 2012, they were a Visiting Student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From 2014 to 2015, they worked as an Engineering Consultant and Engineering Intern at Wood Group Kenny. From 2015 to 2022, they were a Research Assistant (Ph.D. Candidate) and Marine Hydrodynamics Teaching Assistant (Graduate Course) at the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE). During this time, they discovered a new set of nonlinear partial differential equations that govern the evolution of water waves at the onset of generation in a tank, created a novel numerical method to solve for the and propagation of nonlinear water waves in tanks, wrote parallel algorithms which used ~200 CPUs of the U. S., created a new algorithm to quantify the power production of Wave Energy Converters (WEC), and designed a new WEC which utilizes gyroscopes to extract power from incoming waves. Currently, they are a Maritime Data Scientist at CargoMetrics Technologies Inc.

Joao Seixas de Medeiros has completed a Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro between 2009 and 2014. Joao then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Special Non-degree Student in 2012-2013, before completing a Master of Science (M.S.) in Ocean Engineering from the same institution in 2015-2017. Joao is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Ocean Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which is expected to be completed in 2022.
